Shipping news Distress calls for lifeboat on the increase

Distress calls received by the Sumner Lifeboat Institution have increased steadily. A member of the institution, Mr Walter Baguley, said in the New Zealand Coastguard Federation’s annual report that there had been 16 calls for assistance in the last seven months, with 19 people rescued. A high percentage of calls now involved paddle boarders, sail boarders, and canoeists, said Mr Baguley. “The main cause of the incidents has been inexperience with local conditions. There has been no particular period of the year when the alarms have been more persistent,” he said.

The institution would require $16,000 to carry out repair and maintenance work on its craft and equipment this year. It also needed $25,000 towards the costs of a new crew-room, which would provide badly needed storage space. The institution was having communications problems with search and rescue clubs because different groups favoured different equipment.
