Benazir Bhutto arrested
NZPA-Reuter Karachi Pakistan’s dissident leader Benazir Bhutto, was put under house arrest yesterday for three months. “Benazir Bhutto is under house arrest and nobody is allowed to meet her,” a police official said after the house of the daughter of the executed Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was stormed. Ms Bhutto returned to Pakistan last week after 19 months of self-exile in Europe to attend the funeral of her brother. She was allowed to travel abroad in January last year after spending 34 months in
jail or under house arrest at family homes in Karachi and Larkana, her hometown in Sind Province, southern Pakistan. She heads the Pakistan People’s Party, which is grouped under the U-party Movement for the Restoration of Democracy. Ms Bhutto was welcomed at Larkana on August 21 by 75,000 people. Many attended the funeral of her brother, Shahnawaz, who was found dead in his apartment at Cannes in southern France last month. The cause of his death is still not known.
