TV lifts ban

PA Wellington Viewers will from next week see a new style of advertising previously banned by Television New Zealand. When the ban on “comparative advertising” is lifted on Monday, advertisers will be able to compare their products with those of competitors — a style of promotion used extensively in the United States and Australia.

The copy manager for T.V.N.Z., Mr John Mortimer, said companies were already allowed to compare their products with unspecified competitors — “brand versus generic advertising.”

The decision to relax the rules was made after pressure from the advertising industry, he said. The Wellington managing director of Colenso, Mr Roger Mac Donnell, said the advantage of comparing brand against brand was that it enabled advertisers to tell the truth more easily.

“People are entitled to the facts. They will make their purchase decision on a factual basis,” he said.
