Only one seed out
PA Timaru With one exception, the top men’s and women’s seeds have survived the peliminary rounds of the national table tennis open singles championships in Timaru.
The only seeded player to bail out of contention was Canterbury’s Grant McCarroll who lost to Michael McCleary, aged 16, of Hutt Valley in four games. McCleary was far too slick, winning 21-12, 7-21, 2115, 21-12. Only Alan Pedley
and Bodil Martinsson experienced anxious moments among the other top rankers. Martinsson (Canterbury) overcame a game Valerie Beaver (Franklin) in four games while seventh seeded Pedley (Franklin) needed as many games to account for New Caledonia’s Hubert Rainouard. The two No. 1 seeds, Gary Huberl of Australia, and Christine Lee of Auckland, were in sharp form and are on course for tomorrow’s finals.
