London cabs to be built in U.S.
The distinctive London taxi will be assembled in the United States. Complete bodies, manufactured in Coventry, will be shipped to Michigan where the newly formed London Coach Company will fit a Ford 2.3 litre engine and a four speed automatic gearbox. The cabs will be fitted with catalytic converters and will meet all Federal
emission and safety standards. Importers hope to sell about 500 cabs a year. The cab, which will be called the Glider, will replace the United States designed and built Checker cab which is no longer being produced in the United States.
