Minimum speed level in France

France has introduced a minimum speed limit of 80km/h on the outside lanes of its motorways. This is an experimental move and will be tried for a year. It was introduced because the French authorities believe that 15 per cent of motorway accidents are caused by cars having to brake suddenly when they reach a slow-moving car in the outside lane.

The minimum limit will be enforced only during daytime and on level stretches of road in good visibility. An opinion poll indicates that 75 per cent of French motorists approve of the measure. Those who do not comply with the minimum limit will face quite substantial fines.
