Vincere could test stablemate

Special correspondent Gisborne

Though the first day winners Corday and Kinoss will appeal as being good value to repeat their successes, it may be the chance of a stablemate, Vincere, to prove the stumbling block for Corday in the Thos Fraser Memorial on the second at the Poverty Bay Hunt Club’s meeting tomorrow.

Vincere won the hurdles race for the trainer John Mudgway on Wednesday and Corday scored a decisive win in the Balland Crawshaw Handicap. Corday goes from 55kg to 57 in the Fraser Memorial while

Vincere comes in half a kilo better.

He ran second to Rosenveld at the Taranaki meeting so there is no doubt about his capabilities on the flat and he will have inform jockey Garry Williams as his rider.

Corday has been a model of consistency during the latter part of the winter. She won at Wanganui and Awapuni, then was unlucky in not finishing closer when fifth at New Plymouth. Lunar Lad seems to keep his best form for Gisborne and was not disgraced in having to bow to Corday on the first day. Royal Cert, third in the same race, will also appeal.

This Time is likely to benefit from his first-day outing, and Coctails for Two and Gold Mary will also have their share of supporters. Kinmoss was hard pressed to keep Any Pound at bay on Wednesday but is a mare which needs to be kept to her work. As a consequence her trainer Graeme Rogerson, while preferring a strong rider, may give his mare the benefit of a full apprentice allowance.

Blarney Star is certain to appreciate the 1400 m as against the 1200 m on the first day and could be the one for her to beat.
