Hayes nears milestone
The Canterbury rugby captain, Don Hayes, is moving towards a notable milestone — 100 games as captain of the side.
His total at present is 95 and it will advance to 96 in Saturday’s Ranfurly Shield challenge by Mid-Canter-bury.
Canterbury has four further games this season, so barring injury Hayes should hit three figures in the final game, against Manawatu.
Alex Wyllie, whom Hayes took over from in 1980, is the only Canterbury leader with longer service. Wyllie had captained the team 105 times when he retired.
But while Hayes, who turned 30 last April, should beat Wyllie’s captaincy record he still has a long way to go to catch him on games. Wyllie had 210 for Canterbury; Hayes’s total stands at 110.
Before Wyllie came along the longest serving Canterbury captain was lan Penrose, with 64 games. One hundred games as a provincial captain is very rare in New Zealand, and so far as is known the only other player besides Wyllie ’to achieve the feat is Ray Sutherland, who retired as Marlborough’s leader in 1974.
