Ferry arrested, writs issued

PA Wellington Kiwi Shipping’s interisland ferry Kiwi has been arrested and writs issued against the company claiming debts of $85,000.

The 1200-tonne Norwegian-built Bahamasowned ferry has been tied up at Wellington’s Overseas Passenger Terminal since May after the company lost a High Court battle initiated by a Cook Strait rival, Pacifica.

Kiwi Shipping's managing director, Captain Oddvar Andersen, is a former employee of Pacifica. He declined to comment last evening on the future of the ship.

Earlier this week Captain Andersen was quoted as saying the Kiwi would be ready for a Napier, Wellington, Nelson, Lyttelton, Timaru run as scheduled on October 1 when the fivemonth court injunction expired. The company’s operations ■manager, Mr Peter White, said yesterday the ship had been arrested under Admiralty Rules by two companies and some crew members claiming debts.

Two other writs had been aimed against the company.

The total amount is about $85,000 worth. Mr White said winding up action would be initiated by his lawyers on September 7. Neither he nor the captain and senior crew had been paid since their salary cheques bounced on June 20.
