Wind fans fire at Mayfield

Strong winds fanned a fire which swept through an area of pine tree stumps near Mayfield last night. The fire, which covered an area 100 metres by 40 metres, was fought by Fire Service personnel from Ashburton and Mayfield who were alerted at 8 p.m. Four fire vehicles attended the blaze which had been brought under control by midnight.

The Fire Service at Ashburton and Methven also reported that trees and power lines had been blown down by the high winds that lashed parts of Canterbury during the night.
