Thieves take paintings
Thieves smashed a plateglass door before stealing two paintings from the Promenade Gallery in the Surfside Mall, New Brighton, on Saturday. The paintings were taken about an hour after the gallery’s owner, Mrs Jan Pluck, had locked up for the night at 8.45 p.m. Mrs Pluck believes the thieves had been inside the gallery and decided what paintings to steal, before they broke in. Neither of the paintings stolen could be seen from outside the gallery. Both paintings are modern. One, by Steve Gibbs, of a figure, is valued at $3OO. The other, by Reuben Romany, depicting a dove, is valued at $5OO. It was the second painting by Romany to be stolen from a Christchurch gallery in a month. Another was taken from the Artspot Gallery in High Street in July. It was later left on the artist’s doorstep.
