M.O.T. focus on seat belts

Wellington reporter Seat belts will be the focus of a Ministry of Transport road safety campaign starting today. The campaign was aimed at shattering the myths that surrounded the wearing of seat belts and to encourage more people to use them all the time, said the Undersecretary of Transport, Mr Bill Jeffries. Material for the seat-belt campaign had been developed using the results of research carried out earlier this year which examined the reasons people gave for not wearing seat belts.

He said these included the mistaken belief that seat belts could trap people in a car, and that it was better to be thrown clear. Many people had also commented that it was too much bother putting on a seat belt for a short journey. The campaign would be run in two parts. The first part would use the highly successful “blind girl” television advertisement and newspaper advertising, for three weeks. This would be followed in November by new advertisements and intensified enforcement.
