A poor dress rehearsal for Canty

The Canterbury netball team had a poor dress rehearsal for the national tournament which starts in Wellington next week, when it lost two matches at the week-end in a mini tournament in Christchurch. On Saturday, Canterbury frittered away a good lead and lost by a point to Wellington, and yesterday at Cowles Stadium a slick Australian Institute of Sport combination beat Canterbury 58-36. At half-time on Saturday at the Hagley Courts, Canterbury enjoyed a 27-22 lead against Wellington, but lapses of concentration allowed Wellington to sneak ahead in the final quarter. With a couple of minutes left, Wellington had a three point advantage and Canterbury’s efforts to overhaul Wellington failed by a point. The Australian Institute of Sport had two teams in Christchurch and both ended the week-end unbeaten. The standard of play of the two sides was much higher than that of their opponents. Only in the final quarter yesterday when Canterbury played a zone defence against the Australians was the flow of the visitors’ play hindered to any degree. Results of other matches at the week-end: Wellington 30, Otago 25; Australian Institute of Sport I 40, Canterbury Country 24; Otago 41, Canterbury Country 27; Aust. A.I.S. I 75, Canterbury Country 32.
