St Stephen’s earns right to tour Wales
PA Napier St Stephen’s School stormed to a 26-3 victory over Napier Boys High School in the final of the national top four secondary schools rugby tournament in Napier on Saturday. It was an impressive fivetry performance from the mature St Stephen’s side and gave them the right to tour Wales early next year
as the New Zealand schools’ champions. St Stephen’s, however, did not escape the game unscathed with flanker Allan McPherson carried off with a broken leg in the first half and lock Edward Tamanui ordered off after a skirmish near full-time.
St Stephen’s took control of an injury-plagued game in the early stages with a
big forward pack winning a good supply of ball which was pushed along a hard running backline. The winger, Raymond Barchard, and centre, Adam Ruwhiu, scored first half tries and St Stephen’s led 12-0 at half time. The second-five and captain, Wiremu Maunsell, crashed through for their third try in the opening minutes of the second half to place the result beyond doubt. Scores: Final: St Stephen’s School 26 (Raymond Barchard (2), Todd Bell, Wiremu Maunsell, Adam Ruwhiu tries. Paul McPherson three conversions) Napier Boys High School 3 (Simon Kerr penalty). Half-time 12-0. Playoff for third and fourth: Rongotai College 37 (Aaron Kettle (2), Terry Moore, Richard Parkinson, Tapaki Tita tries. Moore (2) and John Jackson (2) conversions.
