Individual scoring trophies
Although Hornby completed its premiership programme with a loss to Halswell on Saturday, two of its players were never seriously challenged for possession of the individual scoring trophies. Barry Edkins was already assured of the Turner and Le Brun Cup as the most prolific goal-kicker, and Vaughan Low retained the A. G. Bailey Cup as the top try-scorer. Only when Ray Peehi, the strongly built Kaiapoi wing,
touched down a second time against Linwood on the adjoining playing field was there any threat to Low. But Peehi managed only to share second placing with Robin Alfeld (Hornby) on 11 tries, two fewer than Low. Equal fourth, with nine tries, were two centres, Colin Tennant (Halswell) and David Perkins (Linwood). Steve Clark (Kaiapoi) and Heemi Wihongi (MaristWestern Suburbs) had eight each, one more than Wayne Wallace, Gary McLauchlan
(both Hornby), Steve Mather (Addington), Gary Finlayson (Linwood), Chris White (Halswell), Michael Williams (Papanui), and Russell Tuuta (Kaiapoi).
Edkins kicked 62 goals and two field goals. He also scored two tries to accumulate 134 points in the premiership. Steve Dixon, of Kaiapoi, was the only other player to exceed a century, his four tries and 47 goals totalling 110 points. A mid-season injury failed to force Greg Brott (Marist-Western) to lower than third place with his 80 points, all from goals. Phil Bancroft (Halswell) finished with 78, and Tony Wildermoth (Papanui) and David Field (Sydenham) had 74 each.
Mark Forsey (Sydenham) kicked most field goals (four) ahead of Perkins (three).
