‘As she is spoke’
Sir,—Dr Elizabeth Gordon (“The Press,” August 14) in writing of the New Zealand accent, states, “We shouldn’t be saying it’s wrong. Is it wrong to be a New Zealander?” In my view the New Zealand accent is hardly wrong, but it is not a pleasant sound, and certainly not a desirable change from standard English. If we must have an accent that will ensure our identity surely we should opt for some degree of euphony.—Yours, etc., MORTON EVANS. Nelson, August 14, 1985.
