Homage to Presley
NZPA-AP Memphis Thousands toured Elvis Presley’s mansion and visited his grave yesterday, paying tribute to the rock and roll king with poems, flowers, and photographs on the eighth anniversary of his death. A week of tributes and events dedicated to Presley, who died on August 16, 1977, at the age of 42, was centred on a memorial service and candlelight march later. The event was expected to attract 10,000, said officials of Graceland Enterprises, Inc, which runs
the mansion as a tourist attraction. The services were begun in 1982, shortly after Graceland was opened to visitors, and each year the crowd grows larger. Fans from as far away as Japan, Australia, and Sweden go to Memphis on the anniversary of Presley’s death to tour his home, attend concerts and film festivals, participate in trivia and art contests, and swap Elvis memorabilia. Graceland officials estimate that 20,000 to 30,000 people will visit Memphis during this year’s anniversary week.
