Six qualify at Chertsey in ideal conditions
Three pacers and three trotters qualified at the Chertsey trials in Ashburton yesterday in what were ideal conditions. Stud’s Donigan, a six-year-old trained by lan Lochhead, qualified with ease and lived up to the promise he has shown at recent trials and work-outs. He has consistently been amongst the place-getters, but in conditions which were against him, he had to wait before qualifying. He dragged Final Offer to a qualifying time too, and there was merit in its per-
formance as it had to make ground in the straight to get near the winner. The second heat winner was Minestrone, a Derek Gibbonstrained four-year-old, which led throughout. Hardceipt had the hard luck story, getting pushed back on the fence after taking the early trail for Carl Markham. It stormed home from well back to just fail to get under the qualifying time.
