Aust, downs N.Z. in squash match

The junior world champion Australian squash side was a class above the New Zealand development selection when it opened its tour at the Rangiora Club courts last evening. Of the four New Zealanders, only the young Nelson player, Michael McSherry, who fought hard for 30 minutes, managed to win a game. McSherry took the first game with some fine squash but from then on his Australian opponent, Adam Schreiber, took charge with his delicate touch. Easily the most impressive of the powerful Australian side was the No. 1, Phillip Larmer, who showed a remarkable ability to find the nick in a match against Canterbury’s

Steven Wren, which lasted only 18 minutes.

Australia’s No. 2, Rodney Eyles, also looked very good against Sean O’Brien, whom he demolished in 15 minutes, putting much slice on his forehand drop shots, and showing deception at the front of the court.

Austin Adarraga, the other Australian, beat Chris Kennedy, of Timaru, in straight games. Kennedy hit his share of good winners. Results, in ranking order. — P. Larmer beat S. Wren 9-2, 90, 9-1; R. Eyles beat Sean O’Brien 9-4, 9-0, 9-0; A. Adarraga beat C. Kennedy 9-4, 9-7, 9-2; A. Schreiber beat M. McSherry 7-9, 9-0, 9-1, 9-5.
