2981 held in prisons
PA Wellington A total of 2981 people were held in New Zealand penal institutions on August 5, said the Minister of Justice, Mr Palmer. This was a drop of 32 from the figure the previous week, and a fall of 39 compared with the corresponding time last year.
Normal cell capacity on August 5 was 2911 males and females, and there were 2871 males and 110 females held on that day, said Mr Palmer. Of the male inmates, 296 were on remand, and of the females, 10 were on remand.
