Farm workers vote
The Farm Workers Association steering committee, after having further talks with lawyers about compulsory membership, has decided to cancel the special general meeting that was to be held on August 17 in Invercargill. A vote of all financial members of the association ?s under way to see if they want to make the first steps in going compulsory. If the vote is for the association to stay voluntary the steering committee felt that the timing of the s.g.m. was not practicable to get an adequate number of farm workers from throughout
New Zealand to set up a good management team. If the vote goes for compulsory membership, a vote of all farm workers in New Zealand who are represented by the F.W.A. will have to be held, under the Agriculture Works Amendment Act which came into force on July 1. Several meetings would be held throughout New Zealand at which the voting would take place. A steering committee meeting will be held on August 17 in Dunedin at which the result of the present ballot will be released.
