Starter steps down
After 37 years in the race starting team at Riccarton Mr Ray Burgess stepped down after the Grand National meeting, which ended on Saturday. Mr Burgess was assistant to Mr Paddy Mac Nab and Mr Bert Morris before becoming the Canterbury’ Jockey Club’s official starter.
Mr Burgess has also acted for several other South Island clubs, including the Marlborough Racing Club, and will bow out finally from race starting after the Marlborough club’s meeting next month.
