Record betting for C.J.C.
By
J. J. BOYLE
This year’s Grand National meeting produced new betting records for a winter carnival at Riccarton.
The club recovered well after a rain-affected first day to finish with a threeday on-course turnover of $1,348,083, an increase of $188,146, and the best on record for a Grand National meeting. T.A.B. bets for the carnival excluding trebles, totalled $4,384,799 easily a record for a National meeting and a spectacular increase of $1,231,055 on last year. It was a memorable first meeting as chairman of the Canterbury Jockey Gub for Mr John Austin.
To make Saturday even more memorable for Mr Austin, Elope, a Vice Regal filly he races in partnership with his mother Margaret, won the Cashmere Plate.
Elope, an even-money favourite, won by a nose from Valley of Wales and survived a protest from the rider of the runner-up.
