Everton retain F.A. shield, beat Manchester United 2-0

NZPA-Reuter London English league champions Everton continued their fine form of last season when they retained the Football Association (F.A.) Charity Shield with a 2-0 victory over F.A. Cup winners Manchester United at Wembley on Saturday.

Goals by England midfielder Trevor Steven and substitute Adrian Heath ensured Everton some measure of revenge for their defeat by Manchester in the F.A. The first came after 27 minutes when Chris McGrath failed to clear and Kevin Sheedy supplied Steven with a simple close-range chance.

The second came after 82 minutes when Heath, a second-half substitute for England striker Gary Lineker — making his Everton debut following a £ 800,000 ($2,086,675) transfer from Leicester — snapped up a loose ball after goal keeper Gary Bailey had fumbled a simple cross.

Frank McDougall scored twice in the final 10 minutes to seal the victory but the afternoon belonged to Jim Bett, Aberdeen’s closeseason signing from Belgian club Lokeren. The Scottish international midfielder crowned an impressive performance with

a goal, a stunning longrange drive, after 69 minutes.

The first goal of the Scottish season was scored by Dundee’s Robert Connor in the first minute against Saint Mirren. He clinched his team’s 2-1 win with a later penalty. Glasgow Celtic scraped a draw at Hearts with a lastminute goal by Paul McStay which equalised one scored by John Colquhoun after 26
