Seahorses beat Californian team
PA • Timaru The Timaru Seahorses gained their first win over an overseas basketball side when they beat Southern California College 100-98 in Timaru on Saturday. In a pulsating match played at a furious pace, the scores were tied 98-all entering the final minute. The man to break the deadlock was Seahorses’ forward, Duncan Taylor, who landed two foul shots to give the home team the win. The Californian side had the chance to equalise in the dying seconds but centre Rob Lucas missed two foul shots.
Southern California Col-
lege, playing the first of three matches in New Zealand, lacked height but made up for it with an aggressive fast-breaking style that frequently stretched the defence of the second division Seahorses.
The home side response was to abandon its normal slower pace and match the Americans basket for basket. The Seahorses were assisted by the presence of two Canterbury players, Eddie McLeod and Dave Usmar, playing in the absence of New Zealand under-20 representatives, Robert Watson and Darren Ward.
