Allpress first again in national finals
PA Rotorua Canterbury’s Gordon Allpress returned to the top of New Zealand darts with a convincing 4-0 win over Waka Moses (Southland) in the men’s singles final at the national championships in Rotorua on Saturday. Allpress never gave his opponent a chance in the all South Island final, which was over in little more than 20 minutes. He signalled his dominance from the outset, starting the first game in the best of seven final with a 58 — scoring in the 18 then
firing a double 20. Allpress, ranked eighth in the world, had previously won the title in 1978. Bubs Sylva, of Auckland, overcame a poor start to defeat Lottie Chalcraft, Taranaki, 4-3 to win her first women’s single title. She has represented New Zealand twice but her best performance in the singles was a third-equal in Nelson last year. Allpress and Sylva are now automatic selections for the New Zealand team to contest the World Cup in Brisbane in October. Louis Mataia, of Auck-
land, earned $2OOO for his 41 win over Lex Turner, Southland, in the DB Open final. Results: Men’s singles final: G. Allpress (Canterbury) beat W. Moses (Southland) 4-0. Men’s pairs final: J. Lines and C. Channell (Auckland) beat R. McGlavish and T. McCoy (Auckland) 4-2. DB open final: L. Mataia (Auckland) beat L. Turner (Southland) 4-1. Women’s singles final: B. Sylva (Auckland) beat L. Chalcraft (Taranaki) 4-3. Pairs final: J. Karena and B. Ranfurly (Wellington) beat M. Luke and M. Wilkie (Hutt Valley) 4-2.
