Burnside beats Carlton in exciting, dramatic clash

The Burnside-Carlton senior women’s hockey encounter on Saturday resulted in a 4-2 win to Burnside. It had all the ingredients of an enthralling match—excitement, drama, and speed combined with high quality hockey. From • the opening whistle the game was played at a fast pace with Carlton surging on to the attack. But a typically quick Bumside break after five minutes gave Leanne McFadden a goal from a circle edge shot. Carlton bounced back and Kathy Paterson made a firm pass to Shirley Haig who eluded a defender before pushing for goal. Cathy Thompson was on hand to push home the shot. With the score tied, play was earnest with both teams making penetrating runs, however, the defences held. Burnside made good use of their flanks while Carlton found space through the centre, with the midfielders, Robyn Hocking and Sue Edmundson, venturing into the attack. The score remained 1-all at the break. Carlton probed the Burnside deep defence with long ranging hits. The Burnside defence looked suspect at times but good cover by Mary Clinton and Kieran Doig prevented Carlton taking many shots on goal. The strong Burnside midfield fed quick and well directed ball to its forwards

who made a number of attacking forays into its circle, but generally the Carlton defence, in particular Hocking and Paterson was strong on the ball and thwarted such attacks. Burnside’s persistent pressure paid off when a bad clearance was picked up by the left wing, Jane Earnshaw, and she put her team into the lead with a firm push. Again Carlton fought back. With minutes to go, and Burnside, short-handed after the right half, Lynda O’Cain, was in the sin bin, a pass from Hocking hit the post and Haig was on hand to score. With the score at 2-all after regular time, overtime was required. Bumside’s experienced players, Judy Phillips and Earnshaw, who had been relatively quiet during regulation time, came to the fore. A goal in each 10 minute spell from Clinton and Phillips respectively, sealed the win. Scores: Burnside, 4. (L. McFadden, J. Earnshaw, M. Clinton, J. Phillips). Carlton, 2. (C. Thompson, S. Haig). Harewood 1, Pegasus 0 After the excitement of the early match, the HarewoodPegasus encounter appeared tame and somewhat disjointed. Harewood performed well enough to gam a 1-0 win. Harewood took time to settle and was soon defending as

Pegasus staged a series of strong attacks through Delwyn Richards but those were largely unsupported. Although the Harewood team was ruffled and mistakes crept into its game, its defenders, Janet Collerton and Thelma Kirk, remained calm and tidied up loose play.

As the team’s confidence grew, Harewood’s Lyn Schulg and Henrietta Carroll showed ability to get out of tricky situations and their delivery of ball to the right wing, Lisa Sutherland, and the left inside, Maree Flannery, led to constructive attacks.

The first half was scoreless, although both goal keepers were called upon frequently to defend their goal line. After the break Hare wood dominated possession but many promising attacks were stopped on the circle edge by Michelle New and Keryn Dawe in particular. Harewood’s failure to switch the point of attack led to circle congestion and direct shots at goal were difficult to achieve.

The only goal of the game came midway through the second half when Maree Flannery netted on second-phase corner play. Flannery’s intelligent passes and Carroll’s dogged driving kept pressure on the Pegasus defence and two penalty strokes were awarded but

neither was converted. Consequently, Harewood’s slender 1-0 lead was always in jeopardy, as throughout the season. Pegasus have shown an ability' to score against the run of play with quick breaks. Scores: Harewood, 1. (M. Flannery). Pegasus, 0. Selwyn 4, Hornby 0 Selwyn played only as well as required to beat Hornby, 4After an unconstructive first 10 minutes in which Selwyn hit wildly without direction, it settled into its well patterned short passing game. June Pettet opened the scoring with a high scooped shot ana Wendy Abbott, who played a more attacking role than in previous matches, pushed home the second. The score became 3-0 just before half-time when Nicky Sherriff goaled from a penalty corner. Although having ample possession and staging numerous attacks in the second half, Selwyn squandered plenty of scoring opportunities with poor finishing. With a sense of urgency going out of the game, the only second half goal came from Pettet who netted after skilful circle work. Hornby’s attacks came mainly through the left flank of Tania Davies and Jenny Turner but they had to contend with the sound defensive play

of Rose Gardiner and the constant back tackling and hassling of Cathy-Lee Jones. Scorers: Selwyn, 4. (J. Pettet 2, N. Sherriff, W. Abbott). Hornby, 0. Woolston 3, Rangiora 0 In a low-key game, Woolston defeated Rangiora, 3-0. _ Despite being beaten, credit, must go to the Rangiora defence for conceding only three goals against a team clearly superior in individual and team skills. The Rangiora defence constantly roboed the Woolston attackers as it lifted its sticks in hitting for goal when a push shot would have sufficed. Woolston led, 2-0, at halftime with goals from Julie Reid, who broke down centre field and netted with a direct shot, and Mary Davies, who followed in on a rebound. Woolston gained much ground with its attacks down the flanks and Janet Sperry on Woolston’s right wing was in an aggressive driving mood. Reid secured her second goal when she scored from a penalty corner. Liz Reeves was the stalwart of the Rangiora team with her tenacious defence while Jill Searle was its most dangerous attacker. Scores: Woolston, 3. (J. Reid 2, M. Davies). Rangiora, 0.
