School’s Maori farewell
Hillmorton High School jupils will give a traditional Maori welcome and Maori concert later this month to honour the teacher who introduced Maori language classes to their school. Mrs Marie Rae was the school’s senior mistress for eight years before retiring earlier this year because of ill-health. The school wanted to thank her for her work, and because of her efforts with Maori classes it was de-
cided a Maori ceremony would be appropriate. The welcome will be performed by the school’s Maori cultural group on August 19. This will include a challenge and a welcoming dance. After the whole school has watched the welcome to Mrs Rae, there will be a formal farewell in the assembly hall, followed by a Maori concert and then a hangi.
