Democrats back $208 wage claim
PA Wellington The Democratic Party says it supports the Federation of Labour and ConV bined State Unions’ claim for a 5208 a week minimum living wage. The present minimum wage stands at ?100.
During the tripartite talks, the unions have suggested it be raised to $2OB a week, while the employers have suggested that it be raised to $145. The Government has yet to. make a final decision on what it will be.
The Democratic Party deputy leader, Mr Garry Knapp, said that to suggest $145 was adequate reward
for a full week’s work was “bordering on the obscene.” “Certainly it is impossible to expect even a single person to live on $145 a week, let alone a family,” he said.
