Table tennis title decided
The strong ABL Riccarton beat the third-placed Merivale Pharmacy Riccarton side, 1-2, in the penultimate round of the A grade inter club table tennis competition on Wednesday, night, to place itself in an unbeatable position at the top of the table.
The hard-hitting junior, Grant McCarroll, ana the former South Island and Canterbury champion, Ling Nan Ming, each recorded straightset victories to decide the championship. The former Canterbury champion, Mike Hamel, made a return to the A grade competition, for the first time this winter. His three wins helped Avonside II pull off a surprise 10-2 win over Auto Centre Avonside, which is second on the table.
Richard Dixon also picked up three wins for the Avonside
111 team. Dallington containued its steady climb, with an 8-4 win over Printshop Avonside. Les Stewart was the outstanding individual player, but his three singles wins did not prevent his team going down. In a bottom-of-the table clash, Riccarton Evergreens narrowly edged .out Riccarton Rovers, 7-5.
