Play again a success
Greg McGee’s play, “Foreskin’s Lament,” will end an extremely successful season at the Court Theatre this evening. The New Zealand play will have been seen by 7872 people when it finishes its run, a 94.5 per cent attendance rate. Until Wednesday evening 7020 people had seen the play and Thursday evening, last evening, and this evening are sell-out full houses. With the exception of Monday evening this week, when there were two empty
seats, the last week has been a sell-out. The play’s season was extended for an extra week. The Court’s promotions manager, Mr Nicholas Mcßryde, said the theatre was delighted with the response to the play. It is not the first time “Foreskin’s Lament” has been a success for the Court. The theatre company performed the play, when it was first written, at the Theatre Royal in 1981. That season attracted 7830 people. It was a 52 per cent attendance rate but the
Theatre Royal seats more than 1000, the Court, 284. Mr Mcßryde said the 94.5 per cent seat occupancy was not a record attendance rate for a play by the theatre. That was held by the 1983-84 summer season of “Footrot Flats,” which had about a 96 per cent attendance He said the response to “Foreskin’s Lament” showed the play was still relevant. Its subject matter of rugby and the New Zealand way of life had not dated as New Zealand plays sometimes did.
