Wyella’s purchase at $l00,000 tops S.I. sale

By

W. R. CARSTON

The activities of two buyers, one a New Zealander acting for Malaysian interests and the other an Australian very keen to acquire the stock of the Otagobased stallion, Noble Bijou, ensured that the eighteenth South Island Bloodstock Sale held in Christchurch yesterday was a bonanza. Between them they spent $236,200 to secure 11 choice lots. Mr Bill Gilmore, of Hamilton, laid out $133,200 on behalf of the Penang owner, Teh Choon Beng, and among his seven purchases was the top-priced lot in the sale. Mr Gilmore silenced all opposition to secure the former top racemare, Wyella, with a final bid of $lOO,OOO. The winner of 12 races this daughter of Causeur and Mellitus, offered on behalf of Mr G. A. Ledingham, of Oamaru, is in foal to Noble Bijou. Altogether Mr Frank Norwood, from Newcastle, spent $103,000 to secure four lots, among them two two-year-old sons of the same sire. He paid $36,000 for a colt by Noble Bijou out of the former top racemare, Palley, and $34,000 for a Noble Bijou-The Listener colt. Both youngsters were from the White Robe Lodge draft. The Mosgiel-based stud’s offering included five sons and daughters of their boom sire, Noble Bijou, and they changed hands for a total of $157,000. Among them was the top priced youngster in the two-year-old section. Mr Peter Clarke, acting on behalf of Australasian Breeding Stables, Ltd, of Palmerston North, had to go to $48,000 to secure an attractive daughter of Noble Bijou and Clarendon Princess. Although at times passings were frequent yesterday competition was keen for quality stock. The aggregate for the 86 lots which changed hands was $824,200 with an average which was slightly more than $9583. The total and average this year established new records. The previous best was 12 months ago when 133 lots changed hands for a total of $781,300 and the average was $5874.
