AUSTRALIA Retail leads rise

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed at record highs yesterday, prices rising across the boards, underpinned by strong demand for retail stocks. Brokers said investors were initially encouraged by an improved performance on Wall Street. Gains gathered momentum in the afternoon as takeover situation stocks continued to attract buying interest. By the end of trading, the all-ordinaries index eclipsed its previous closing high of 941.3 (on July 25) to close 6.7 points up at 941.7. The all-industrials also closed at a record, gaining 8.8 points to 1371.2. The all-re-

sources indicator added 5.1 points to 609.0 and the gold index rose five points to 1031.7. Myer highlighted trading with a gain of 10c to 335 on national turnover of 1.7 M shares. Coles added 15c to 395 and Woolworths 10c to 346. Brokers said heavy demand for Myer was sparked by the alternative cash share offer of three Coles shares plus 552 which many investors saw as a cheap entry into Coles.
