AUSTRALIA Rise on speculation

PA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer, with speculation in situation stocks boosting investor confidence, brokers said. They said strong showings in the banking, media and retailing sectors reflected the market’s resilience. The market is underpinned by a general shortage of scrip, attracting institutional bargain-hunting, brokers said. By the close of trading the all ordinaries index had gained 2.9 points to 934.8. A split in the market was reflected by a 5.3 point rise in the all industrials index to 1362.1 and a 2.9 point drop in the gold marker to 1026.9. The all resources indicator climbed 1.2 points to 603.9.
