Police chief killed
Gunmen have shot dead a senior Sicilian policeman and an aide in the second attack within 10 days on officers hunting the Mafia. Antonino Cassara, the 38-year-old deputy head of the Palermo mobile police squad, died when the gunmen opened fire as he and his police escorts were getting into a car outside his apartment block in a suburb of Palermo. Mr Cassara had been engaged in recent investigations of the Mafia, particularly in arrests that resulted from information supplied by a former Mafia chieftain, Tommaso Buscetta, who turned State’s evidence last year. — Palermo, Sicily.
