Dowry rows claim 1500 women

NZPA-Reuter New Delhi More than 1500 Indian women have been killed over the last three years in dowry disputes, Parliament has been told. The Minister of State for Home Affairs, Ram Dulari Sinha, said that there had

been 631 “dowry deaths” last year compared with 503 in 1983 and 407 in 1982.

Victims are killed by husbands or in-laws frustrated by the failure of their demands that the women's families make more dowry payments. Most victims, who die

when they are doused with kerosene and set alight, are reported as suicides. The police say that prosecution for murder is difficult without dying declarations from victims. Dowry was made illegal in 1961 but is widely practised, especially among

Hindu families in northern India. The amount of dowry is crucial to a girl’s marriage prospects. Ms Sinha said that more than 16,000 rape cases had been reported to the police over the last three years across the country.
