Biola beaten

NZPA staff correspondent Wellington

The Biola University men’s basketball team was beaten, 85-56, in a tame test of New Zealand’s latest combination at the Walter Nash stadium last evening.

The match was the first of three between the sides, and gave the New Zealand coach, Bob Bishop a debut win.

New Zealand took time to warm to the task of winning, disadvantaged in both height and talent. It led, 2924, after a slow first half

and only struck its rhythm in the final five minutes of the match.

The captain, Stan Hill, the pinman in an inconsistent New Zealand offence, topscored with 19. The leading junior and promising guard, Tony Smith, hit 12 points from long range while the freshman, Byron Vaitoe, showed signs of scoring brilliance.

The teams go on to Palmerston North for a second encounter tonight, and play the third match in Auckland on August 13.
