Forest advisers appointed

Nine scientists have been appointed to the Protected Areas Scientific Advisory, Committee, to advise the Forest Service and Lands and Survey Department on protected natural areas.

The committee will replace the State Forests Scientific Reserves Advisory Committee, which was restricted to advising the Forest Service on its ecological areas programme.

That State Forests committee has already contributed to the setting aside of, or obtaining approval in ■ principle for, more than 350,000 ha of State forests as “best examples of natural forest types of scientific importance.”

Members of the committee are Mr Harry Bunn, formerly of the Forest Research Institute; Mr Colin Ogle, Wildlife Service; Dr Peter Wardle, D.S.I.R. Botany Division; Dr George Gibbs, Victoria University zoology department; Dr lan Atkinson, D.S.I.R. Soil Sivision; Dr Phillip Tonkin, Lincoln College Soil Science Faculty, Professor Kevin O’Connor, Lincoln College Centre for Resource Management; Dr David Towns, Wildlife Service; and Mr Bruce Burns, Forest Service Aas secretary.
