Main crossbred fleece prices fell 4 to 5 per cent at a combined Timaru and Invercargill wool sale in Christchurch yesterday. Medium crossbred and second-shear were down 4 per cent and strong crossbred was down 5 per cent compared with the last sale of last season, on June 27.
Better length crossbred crutchings were barely steady and shorter lines down as much as 5 per cent. Crossbred skirtings fell 2.5 to 5 per cent and oddments fell 5 to 7.5 per cent. The competition was well spread with a good bidding tone. Eastern Europe and New Zealand mills were the main buyers, supported by western Europe and the Far East. The Wool Board gave substantial support to the market, bidding on 2857 bales, 26 per cent of the offering, and buying or having passed to it 1069 bales, or 9.7 per cent. The market indicator for the sales at Christchurch and Wellington was 361 c greasy and 485 c clean.
