In the Glen impressive

By

J. J. BOYLE

In the Glen gave all the encouraging signals that could be wished for in her winding-up trial for the Winter Cup at Riccarton yesterday. One of few tried for speed on the chip track, she pleased her Riccarton trainer, Garth Jackson, and impressed all others interested by sprinting 1200 m in 1:17.4, the last 600 m in 395.

“She has thrived on her racing,” Jackson commented after the star of his team, winner of the Brabazon and Paparua Handicaps at her last two starts, completed her task in the hands of Brian Hibberd. Earlier the Gore-trained Chook a Rook dashed in from the 600 m on the chip track in 37.65, a pleasing

effort. Most of the Winter Cup candidates went through their set pieces on the No. 7 grass, which gave faster footing than the chip track. Fuego, under a good weight and with the outside running, was going strongly alongside Taxtale finishing 1000 m in 1:5.6, the last 600 m in 37.65. Hide the Loot was keen to quicken in the hands of Grant Elliot towards the end of his 1200 m with Our Ruler. The stablemates recorded 1:21.6, and 41.8 for the final 600 m.

The Awapuni-trained Flying Tui led Playback by three lengths ending 1000 m in 1:5.8, the last 600 m in 37.85. Bronze Valley, another Awapuni-trained form runner, for the Winter Cup, had Sgephen Jenkins up when he ran 1200 m in 1:19,

the last 600 m in 38.65. Noble Note led his brother and stablemate, Xerox, by a neck finishing 800 m, the last 600 m in 37.85.

Noble Note, the Winter Cup top weight, looks sharpened by recent racing. Buffy Beaufort did her winding-up trial in company with Our Rob. They got through their 600 m in 38.75, with Our Rob appearing to have slightly the better of it near the end.

Ampac and Applicate did well to sprint 1200 m in 1:16.6, the opening 600 m in 37.85.

Agragate and Native Belle, form runners for North Island stables in two of the lower-graded flat races tomorrow, were paired to run 600 m in 38.15. They finished on terms. Benlea Boy and Pardisco recorded 40s, an effort

matched by Clint and Walden Pond to cap off their work leading up to the Styx Hurdles.

Blarney Fair, a form runner from the Thistoll stable for the Rolleston Handicap, sprinted from the 1000 m in 1:6.3, the last 600 m in 39.55. Famillion, the Rolleston Handicap top weight, sped in from the 600 m in 37.65.

Bymai and Battle On, two of the form runners for the Grand National, got through strong striding work on the chip track. Battle On wrenched a joint early last week, but Jock Singers has been able to keep the chestnut active.

The trouble spot has had hours of cold water treatment, and now Mr Singers would welcome a bit of rain on Riccarton’s drying track before tomorrow.
