No profit in following favourites
Backing the favourites in the Grand National Steeplechase and the Winter Cup is no profitable exercise.
(1979), Chumson (1977), Thun (1976) and Koral (1965). London Trader (1980) was the most recent successful favourite in the Winter Cup. Others in the period under review were Ragham (1973), Triton (1971), Kalott (1967), and Mukupai (1966). The biggest surprise in the recent history of the race was the victory of the Southland veteran, Diamond Pal, in 1977. He was at odds of close to 100 to one. In the last 20 years win favourites have fared equally well, or equally badly, in both events, their strike rate being one in four.
The last successful win favourite in the Grand National Steeplechase was Grey Warbler, in 1982. Others successful as win favourites in the last 20 years were Guess Who
