SIDELINES
HUNDREDS OF GYMNASTS will converge on Cowles Stadium this week-end for the Canterbury junior, and South Island open artistic gymnastics championships. The women’s elite South Island title will be a battle between Nicky Hodges and Kay Nicholson. A new grade, for junior elite gymnasts, will be included for the first time. Three of the eight gymnasts in this grade in New Zealand — Kelly Bray, Tracy Sinclair and Jane Nuttall, all from Christchurch — have entered.
THREE ROUNDS REMAIN to find the top goal-scorer in the Rothmans Soccer League. Colin Walker (N.Z. Permanent Gisborne) and the DB Wellington midfielder-turned-striker, Billy Harris, have each picked up 12 goals, while Simon Dwyer, of McKee Nelson United, has 11. Barry Weymouth has scored 10 for the league leader, Hanimex-North Shore, and his team-mate, Kevin Hagan, and Andy Deeley (4XO Dunedin City) are on nine goals. The annual Golden Boot award, presented to the top goal-scorer, will go to one of these players. The rest are too far back to count.
AS WAS reported earlier this week, Craig Green has a great knack for getting into championship-winning rugby teams, or could it be that he brings success with him? In his four years in Christchurch he has been in three (Lincoln College 1981, Christchurch 1982 and Glenmark 1984). On Sunday he will be trying for a fourth with the club he joined this year, Shirley. But before he came to Christchurch Green had two seasons in Mid-Canterbury, and in 1979 he was a member of the Rakaia team which shared the senior title there with Mayfield. So, really, on Sunday Green could make it five championships in seven years and all with different clubs.
