Plant advice again

Fortnightly publication of the Plant Health Monitor will begin next Friday, August 16.

The monitor will provide up-to-date information on pests and diseases affecting crops and pastures throughout the South Island, and predict problems that could arise, allowing farmers and growers to take preventative action.

It will also give information on important weeds and their control, and agronomic information on aspects of crop husbandry such as cultivation, fertiliser use, irrigation, harvesting and storage. The monitor will be compiled by two M.A.F. specialists, Dr Ray French, and Dr

lan Harvey and staff at the Lincoln Plant Health Centre of the ministry.

Inputs will be collected from other M.A.F. field staff, D.S.I.R. people, Lincoln College staff, and post graduate students.

Farmers and growers are advised to monitor their own crops carefully at least once a week, and to report any signs of pest or disease to their local agent or advisor for inclusion in the monitor. It has also been suggested by the compilers, that farmers and growers file away each monitor as a chronological record of problems that arise from month to month or year to year
