China’s message
Rebuffing the latest peace overture from Pope John Paul 11, Peking has again accused the Vatican of interfering in China’s domestic affairs by maintaining diplomatic relations with Taiwan. A Foreign Ministry spokesman, Li Zhaoxing, said that China took note of the Pope’s statement last week in St Peter’s Square, where the Pontiff said: “The church is sympathetic to the commitment to modernisation and progress in which the Chinese people are engaged." The spokesman added: “We have also taken note that the Vatican still maintains so-called diplomatic relations with Taiwan and continues to interfere in China’s internal affairs." — Peking.
