Irresponsible cyclists

Sir,—On Wednesday within a period of two hours, the’

following irresponsible cycling was observed. A boy about 10 years of age travelled as fast as he could go for nearly the full length of one section of Harris Crescent, Papanui, on the footpath, while his mate rode on the wrong side of the road, trying to keep up with him. Further round Harris Crescent, in a comparatively quiet area, a boy about nine was riding his cycle unnecessarily on the footpath. In Woodchester Street, Shirley, a group of teen-age schoolgirls rode six abreast on the road, the outermost cyclist beyond the centre of the road and riding no hands. It scared me to drive past her in the opposite direction. I feel there will be no improvement until there is greater supervision by the transport authorities, and the cancellation of the right to ride a cycle, for three months or more, by any irresponsible cyclist. How can this type of cyclist be trusted to ride on footpaths? — Yours, etc., A. SMITH. August 1, 1985.
