Acclimatisation societies
Sir, — The announcement by the Minister of Internal Affairs that on the score of efficiency he intends to abolish acclimatisation societies and have one fishing licence to cover the whole of New Zealand has caused violent reaction and anger amongst anglers and environmentalists. It is laughable that a Government department could be more efficient than voluntary and dedicated acclimiatisation societies. It must be conceded that Mike Moore is the best Minister of Tourism this country has had and recognises the tourist bonanza our wildlife and freshwater fisheries constitute but it is a tragedy that there is a complete lack of co-ordination in the Government approach to protection and development of the environmental asset. I warn the Minister of Internal Affairs that the Save the Rivers body has conveners throughout New Zealand and will contest electorates at will if his cranky approach is continued. — Yours, etc., L. J. STEVENS. Oamaru, August 3, 1985.
