P.M.’s bill a reason for change?
NZPA-PA London The British Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher, who is searching for an alternative to the council rating system, could soon be paying one of the highest rates in the pound in Britain. Mrs Margaret Thatcher and her husband, Denis, will buy a new home on an exclusive development at Dulwich, in London’s Southwark borough, which
charges one of Britain’s highest rate levels. The couple exchanged contracts on a house priced between £380,000 ($988,000) and £475,000 ($1,235,000). The house has up to seven bedrooms and elaborate security arrangements. Twenty-three exclusive homes are being built on the site and more than half have been sold. They are due for completion by the
end of next year. The estate, which backs on to Dulwich golf course, is bounded on the road by a 5m high brick wall. Wrought iron gates were bolted and barred to all but invited visitors. Some houses have their own saunas and each home has a garden with lily pond, streams and small wooden bridges. The Thatchers sold their Chelsea home for between £ 300,000 ($780,000) and £ 400,000 ($1,040,000) recently.
