Aust, hopes raised
NZPA-AAP Manchester Australia’s hopes of final day rain came true here yesterday, and placed doubt on the prospects of further play in the Fourth Test at Old Trafford. Steady rain fell from the early hours of the morning and was still continuing past the scheduled time for the start of play. The umpires, Mr Harold “Dickie” Bird and Mr David Shepnlrd, planned an inspec-
tion at 10.15 a.m., but were forced to cancel it because rain was still falling. The umpires had still not gone out to inspect the wicket area by the scheduled starting time of 11 a.m. (British time). The rain simplified considerably the task of the Australian batsmen, who needed to occupy the crease until at least tea to make the game safe. Australia was 4-192 at the close of the fourth day’s play, needing , another 33 runs to avoid ah innings defeat. X-
