Obituary Mr Tumokai Katipa

PA Hamilton Mr Tumokai Katipa, the husband and “right-hand-man” of the late Waikato Maori Princess Te Puea Herangi, died at his home near Ngaruawahia early yesterday. He was 85. He had been in poor health for some months. A Kingitanga spokesman said he was the last senior linking person with the founding of Turangawaewae marae at Ngaruawahia, the seat of the Kingitanga (Maori King movement), and*Te Puea’s heritage.

He was born Rawiri Katipa of the Ngati Amaru people of the Tuakau district, and married Te Puea - the most dynamic and influential leader of the Tainui tribes this century, in 1922, when he was 21 and she was 38. Te Puea gave him the name, Tumokai, or worker, in honour of the support he gave her as she led her people to re-establish themselves in their old homeland after their defeat igr the Waikato war of the fS6Os.
