The wrecked tail section of an Air New Zealand F 27 Friendship aircraft which was clipped by an Air New Zealand Boeing 747 jumbo jet being towed past at Auckland Airport yesterday morning. No-one was injured in the collision, which occurred when the jumbo was being towed from the domestic to the international terminal. Repairs to the aircraft are expected to cost several hundred thousand dollars, according to the airline’s public affairs manager, Mr Bob Wallace. The Friendship, expected to be out of service a week, will need a new tail fin. Damage to the Boeing 747 appeared to be confined to a section of the edge of the left wing. The aircraft is expected to be back in service by Friday. The accident happened at 9.35 a.m. The jumbo had arrived at the domestic terminal on its normal Tuesday flight from Christchurch and had been parked at the end of the domestic terminal. Mr Wallace said the internal investigation should be ready to report back by the end of the week. He said the airline had insurance to cover the accident.
